WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU COLOR YOUR HAIR?

Hair dye can be permanent, demi- permanent or temporary.  Permanent hair dye will lighten natural hair, cover grey and deposit tone.  If you're looking to audition a bit of change without too much commitment then a demi-permanent will be the better option for you. Demi- permanent color will tone blond hair, darken light hair or add a subtle hue to natural or pre-pigmented hair. Demi permanent color lasts 4-6 weeks.  If a drastic change is what you're looking for then a bleach session is what you need :)

Temporary colors do not need to be mixed with a catalyst and work best on pre-lightened hair.  These will generally last 2-3 weeks depending on the chosen shade. Think PINK :)

TIPS AND TRICKS

PUT DOWN THE SHAMPOO BOTTLE!!!  Seriously,  shampoo isn't meant for daily use.  Your scalp produces sebum (oil, grease) naturally,  when you shampoo you remove the sebum thus forcing your body to create more.  Instead, try brushing your hair to help distribute said sebum through the ends of your hair, where it's really needed. Over time, you'll notice your hair gets greasy less often and you'll be saving mega $$$ on shampoo! Not to mention your hair color will stay vibrant longer :)
When you DO shampoo your hair, it's best to use lukewarm water.  Cold water locks in dirt and hot water burns/dries out the hair.  Follow with a conditioner and a cool water rinse to lock in moisture.

If you have blond or gray hair and constantly struggle with your hair turning "yellow"  then use a blue or purple tinted shampoo once a week to help minimize the brassy tones.

Never towel dry your hair as that roughs up the cuticle causing frizz and breakage.  Instead, squeeze excess water out of the hair and pat it dry very gently.

If your hair is dry from too much color, then a weekly protein mask will  help restore the keratin.  If it's dry from over-styling and too many parties then a weekly hydrating mask will be best.

DO's and DONT's

DO invest in a nice bristle brush. Mason Pearson is my favorite. This will help distribute oil through your hair.
DON'T tear your hair out by using hard-bristled brushes and combs.
DO use the "wet brush", it's amazing.

DON'T exercise or drink coffee the day of a chemical service. It gets the blood flowing and hurts the scalp during application. Skip shampooing before a service as well.
DO wait a few days after a chemical service to shampoo your hair.

DO get your hair trimmed every 8 weeks to avoid split ends.
DON'T cut your hair yourself. Especially your bangs. Bang trims are free :)

DON'T wear your hair in an elastic band everyday, this will cause breakage.
DO utilize hair pins, screws and scrunchies.

DON'T heat style your hair too often.
DO use a heat protectant before blow drying or heat styling.

DON'T use cheap shampoo and conditioner.
DO save your drains and brush your hair before you shower.
